Scranton, Pennsylvania
Scanton is Pennsylvania’s sixth largest city and has an estimated population of more than 72,000 residents as of 2006. In its beginnings, Scranton was inhabited by the Lenape tribe. Settlers came to the area in the late 1700’s where they established many small businesses and mills. Soon after, Scranton became the major producer of steel and iron t-rails for the railroad. Scranton was officially incorporated as a city in 1866. After WWII the area’s prosperity declined because of decreasing transit on the railroads.
There are many things to do while in Scranton. You can visit the former Lackawanna train station, the University of Scranton, the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple, Steamtown National Historic Site, Electric City Trolley Museum, the Houdini Museum, Nay Aug Park, Everhart Museum, and the Scranton Iron Furnaces. You can also take the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, visit the Montage Mountain, enjoy the Icebox Skating Complex, and see the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees play.
